Metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia: how much is attributable to drug treatment?

چکیده
In the last two decades, the use of second generation antipsychotics has superseded first generation antipsychotics mainly because of their lower propensity to cause the troublesome extra-pyramidal side effects and claims of efficacy in treatment of negative and cognitive symptoms. But in last few years, various metabolic complications in the form of weight gain, glucose intolerance leading to diabetes mellitus and lipid disturbances in the form of hypertriglyceridemia and low protective HDL cholesterol surfaced the clinical scenario in psychiatric practice. The increased health damages with clustering of these metabolic parameters led to the gradual concept of syndrome X, Insulin resistance syndrome and finally metabolic syndrome. Studies in different parts of world established the high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients of schizophrenia which was further increased by antipsychotics (second generation). Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders decrease life expectancy by 20% with the standardized mortality rate being twice as compared to general population and cardiovascular illnesses remain the most important overall cause accounting for over 60% of the total deaths in schizophrenia. 1 ABSTRACT

Catatonia: extinct, lost, or forgotten?
Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that occurs in some primary psychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, mood disorders), or due to general medical conditions (e.g., neurological disorders, drug poisoning, metabolic disorders) (1). Although it is uncommon, but if it goes unrecognized in medical and surgical units (2), it can increase morbidity and mortality. Moreover, making a connectio...
متن کاملPrevalence of metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia patients treated with antipsychotic medication
Background: The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (Mets) in schizophrenic patients in a 6-month period of treatment with antipsychotic medication. Methods: In this study, 60 volunteer schizophrenic patients were included. At the onset and 6 month after treated with antipsychotic medication, fasting blood sugar (FBS), serum triglyceride (TG), high de...
متن کاملP-192: Association of Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) Gene Polymorphism with Clomiphene Citrate Treatment in Iranian Infertile Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Background: Clomiphene Citrate (CC) is the most frequently administered drug for the treatment of female infertility [e.g. polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)]; which aims at restoring ovulation. Clomiphene is metabolized by CYP2D6, an important enzyme responsible for the metabolism of approximately 25% of clinically used drugs. CYP2D6 is very polymorphic and thought to result in inter- individual...

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of several cardiovascular risk factors that include: obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and high blood glucose, and often requires multidrug pharmacological interventions. The management of MetS therefore requires high healthcare cost, and can result in poor drug treatment compliance. Hence drug therapies that have pleiotropic beneficial effects may be...
